Stud Services

Since its founding in 1995 by Dr. Dana Bleifer, Rose City Veterinary Hospital’s reproduction department has been a trusted leader in canine breeding. With decades of experience, we offer our clients expert guidance, ensuring safe and efficient breeding practices for dogs worldwide.

How It Works

Shipping bitches or stud dogs can be both costly and stressful, potentially impacting the reproductive cycle or semen quality. However, using chilled or frozen semen allows for successful breeding without the need for travel, whether it’s across the country or around the world.

At Rose City Veterinary Hospital, we offer full-service canine semen banking, including freezing, storage, and shipping services. Freezing semen extends the breeding potential of a stud well beyond its lifetime, providing flexibility and peace of mind.

Once frozen, semen can be stored indefinitely in liquid nitrogen. Our storage tanks require no electricity, so they are unaffected by power outages. When needed, we can ship semen in compact liquid nitrogen tanks via FedEx for domestic locations or to a cryogenic shipping company that can assist with international shipments.

Please note, it is important to research the specific requirements for specimen samples intended for international shipments. While we no longer ship internationally, although we have referrals for a cryogenic shipping company to assist with global transport.

Thank you for considering Rose City Veterinary Hospital. We hope our website helps answer your questions regarding semen freezing and storage requirements.

Rose City Veterinary Hospital offers convenient online forms to fill out for the domestic shipment of both chilled and frozen canine semen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do to collect semen on my stud dog?

That’s an easy one! Just call one of our offices at the numbers listed below and we can make you an appointment.

What will I need to bring to my appointment?

You will need to bring the following:

  1. You are required to bring your AKC or other registration papers verifying that you are a current owner of the stud. (for unregistered dogs this does not apply)
  2. You will need a copy of your DNA Profile, or we can collect the DNA sample and send it in for an additional $50.
  3. We recommend your pet be microchipped and vaccinated against Rabies
  4. You will need a current Brucellosis test.

What if I want to send my stud with an agent for collection?

Please provide that person with all the items above and payment. Please note that the semen contract MUST be signed by the STUD DOG OWNER. The semen will be collected and stored in Stud owners’ name.

Can I let someone else collect my stud and let them own the semen?

Yes and No. Semen Ownership can be transferred to persons, not listed as an owner on the registration papers, by completing a Semen Usage Form signed by the owners listed on the registration papers. The semen will need to first be registered to the stud dog owner and then transferred to the new owner.

Is there a cost for annual semen storage?

For 2024, the annual storage fee is $100.00. Please be aware that prices are subject to change each year.

This fee does not include insurance. We strongly encourage all clients to ensure their stored specimens are properly insured. You may want to check with your homeowners, renters, or farm insurance to see if your stored specimens at Rose City Veterinary Hospital are covered under your existing policy. If you do not have current coverage, feel free to consult one of our reproduction coordinators for more information on available insurance options.

How do I arrange to ship my frozen semen?

Planning ahead is always the best approach. To start, you’ll need to complete a Semen Usage Form and a Frozen Semen Shipping Form. Once filled out, please email the required documents to repro@rosecityvets.com. After sending, be sure to call one of our reproduction assistants at 626-796-8387 to confirm receipt and discuss any semen transfers or shipping details.

Please note that there are substantial additional fees for rushed semen shipments: $200 for shipments requested with less than 48 hours’ notice and $300 for those requested within 24 hours. While we do our best to accommodate all requests, availability of shipping tanks is not guaranteed. Planning ahead helps ensure smoother processing and fewer complications.
