Otoplasty - Ear Crop
Our Experience
For over 50 years, Dr. Robert LaBounty provided exceptional ear cropping procedures in the San Fernando Valley. As he planned for retirement in 2012, Dr. LaBounty sought a veterinarian he could trust to uphold his high standards of expertise and quality care. He recognized Dr. Bleifer, who has over 20 years of experience in reproduction, as the ideal successor to continue his legacy.
After months of rigorous training, Dr. LaBounty confidently closed his practice in December 2013, knowing that Dr. Bleifer was well-prepared to carry on the tradition of excellence.
To ensure a seamless transition and outstanding aftercare for clients and their pets, Dr. Bleifer welcomed two exceptional team members from Dr. LaBounty’s staff: Bridget and Gloria. Together, they bring over 50 years of combined experience in ear aftercare and taping, ensuring that every pet receives the highest level of support and care.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ear crop?
Ear cropping, formally known as otoplasty, involves the trimming of the pinna (ear flap) for both health and cosmetic reasons in dogs. The primary goal of this procedure is to reshape the ear flap so that it stands erect, enhancing the dog’s appearance while also addressing certain health considerations. – This is an elective procedure.

- We crop 20 different breeds, as well as perform the ear drop, and implant procedures. Please call our office to check if your breed is on that list.
It’s important to recognize that many dog breeds are predisposed to genetic disorders, including conditions like von Willebrand disease, which can lead to clotting issues. Before your pet’s procedure, we strongly recommend discussing any potential genetic concerns with our team. Please note that genetic testing may take up to four weeks to yield results, so planning ahead is essential for your pet’s health and safety.
What should I expect?
We require a non-refundable deposit, once your appointment is scheduled, to confirm your pet’s surgical appointment. All necessary documents will be attached to your confirmation email. Please print and complete these forms before your pet’s appointment. You can either return them to our office via email (which is very helpful) or bring them with you on the day of your visit.
On the day of the appointment, please follow the instructions outlined in your confirmation email. When you arrive, check in with one of our client care representatives at the check-in window. They will process and review your pre-surgical consent forms and notify the surgical team of your arrival.
You will have the opportunity to discuss the best style of ear crop for your pet with our team. After this discussion, your pet will be admitted for the surgical procedure. Our team will place an IV catheter, perform the approved pre-surgical bloodwork (please note that this bloodwork does not diagnose clotting or genetic disorders), and prepare your pet for surgery.
It’s important to understand that all surgical procedures carry some risk, including those associated with anesthesia. While we take every precaution to ensure your pet’s safety, some animals may experience reactions to anesthesia. Our experienced team will monitor your pet closely throughout the procedure to minimize any risks.
Your pet will receive pre-medications to minimize the amount of anesthesia required. Once the procedure is complete, your pet will be bandaged, and you will receive a text update with the expected pickup time. Pets are typically ready for discharge the same day between 5:00 and 5:45 PM, though pickup times may vary. Thank you for entrusting us with your pet’s care!
How long will it take for the ears to stand?
Aftercare can be a lengthy process, as achieving properly standing ears involves several variables. Factors such as your pet’s breed, the length of their ears, the thickness of the cartilage, and your active participation all play a role.
Please be aware that your pet will need to have their ears retaped weekly until they stand correctly, and it’s essential that their ears remain clean and dry while taped. It’s important to understand that there will be weekly fees associated with ear taping. Additionally, all pets must remain current on their vaccines and parasite prevention throughout this process.
This commitment requires a team effort between you and our veterinary team to ensure the best results for your pet.
Can I tape my dog’s ears?
We do not recommend at-home ear taping unless you are experienced, as improper techniques can lead to permanent damage to your pet’s ears. Additionally, we advise against relying on YouTube tutorials for guidance. We have seen clients follow these videos and suffer unfortunate consequences, including the loss of the tips of their dog’s ears due to incorrect taping methods. For the best results and to ensure your pet’s safety, we strongly encourage you to trust our professional team for ear taping.
What should I know when making this decision?
When considering ear cropping for your pet, it’s essential to recognize that this is an elective procedure that requires a commitment from both you, the pet owner, and the team at Rose City Veterinary Hospital. The desired results are not guaranteed and will not happen overnight; you may need to bring your pet to our office weekly for ear taping services over several months to achieve the desired stance.
Additionally, there are risks associated with anesthesia, so we strongly encourage testing for pets predisposed to genetic or blood clotting disorders prior to surgery. Please take the time to consider the costs of the services involved before making your decision. Your pet’s well-being is our top priority, and we are here to support you throughout this journey.
